2016 Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion

Posted by Shelly in Aegaeus with 0 comments.

Sunday night’s 2016 Golden Globes Red Carpet were apparently more entertaining than the ceremonies, according to sources and of course the after party is always a big hit with some celebs actually changing into entirely different looks for that.  So predictably there were fashion hits and fashion faux pas and I was watching all and taking notes to put together another tongue in cheek blog about Red Carpet award season fashion.  In general there were a lot of white and wishy washy flesh tones, column gowns seemed all the rage and high necklines were seen everywhere. Men’s fashion seemed to be taking a step forward with velvet and textured or embossed jackets although I wasn’t crazy about the wide lapels on Dwayne Johnson or Jason Statham. Although we can’t cover every gown, below you will find some of the most outstanding.

Styling Diva’s best dressed was Jennifer Lopez! La-la Lopez was smashing in a mustard stunner by Giambattista Valli . She oozed classic Hollywood in a vibrant yellow gown with slit skirt, high neckline and capelet?  Not JLo’s usual style but it works with her glowing complexion, the casual swept back hair, statement red lip matching her manicure perfectly and awesome, literally dripping with diamonds, diamond choker which I heard had over 200 carats of the fiery stones, two necklaces, draped one over the other to get the effect and a dazzling clutch to match.  It’s refreshing to see her in such a clean design, no distraction from boobs or butt and she’s still KILLING IT!

A close second for best dressed was in my opinion, Kirsten Dunst looking rich and yet Boho chic in a black velvet gown with a barely there laced together bodice and open strappy back; the deep v neck was cut down to the waist. The whole effect was quite regal in an edgy kind of way.  Hair and make up were minimal but vampy.

Kate Hudson resembled a mermaid in a shimmering, midriff baring flesh colored column gown by Michael Kors with a bandeau top and beachy hair. Her glowing complexion combined with the color of the gown made for a goddess type effect.  Gorgeous! It’s all about abs on the red carpet this year!

I love this deep blue, pocketed Zac Posen gown on Gina Rodriguez. She looks simply gorgeous. The color compliments her skin and the turned down neckline showcases her lovely shoulders.  With swept back hair and minimal jewelry, it’s all about the dress!

Lady Gaga blew me away in a classic old Hollywood style Versace gown made of structured black velvet. It almost looks like she’s wearing a waist trainer and the overall effect is very dramatic with the sweetheart neckline.  She has a very definite style that I love. Elegant and simple lines but I would like to see her in something more daring. The hair color is a bit too yellow and her thick eyebrows are too heavy which ages her.

Rooney Mara was probably the biggest fashion risk taker of the night in a complicated flesh colored gown by Alexander McQueen with ruffles and fringe, an off the shoulder neckline and minimal make up.  Love her fishtail braid but I found this look to be kind of washed out. It looks like Freddy Krueger slashed up a bunch of toilet paper.

Jada Pinkett Smith was smokin’ hot on the red carpet in a flowing sea green Versace gown with a slit skirt, draped neckline and capelet. Emerald ear bobs for jewelry completed her ensemble.

Kate Winslet glammed it up in a navy blue column by Ralph Lauren with a twist neckline that showed off her lovely shoulders. Satin accents at the neckline and down each side gave a slimming effect.

Katy Perry’s golden globes were out on display in a deep v necked, dusky rose  strappy column gown by Prada. I don’t like the bumpit in her hair but love her lip color matched to the exact shade of her dress.  Her look was very sultry sex siren. This dress had tiny cutouts in the back at the waist with a bow detail. Her only jewelry was a dazzling diamond cuff and a few rings.

Jennifer Lawrence…scarlet gown, scarlet lip. Hair was kind of severe looking which ages her. I did not care for this gown. It hides her waistline with the overhanging crop top bodice and I didn’t care for the cutout effect as it somehow swept around to the back and became one with the dress again.  It appeared disconnected from the skirt in the front, puckered or badly sewn and hanging in an unflattering way.  She wore an amazing diamond collar.  Is it just me or is she starting to resemble Ellen DeGeneres?

Alicia Vikander looked very girly in a sleeveless  white sequinnedgown with a high, ruffled neckline by Louis Vuitton. The dress featured a cross strap back and pleated skirt with silver inside that looked somehow whimsical and sweet which was perfect on her.  Perhaps a little understated for a major awards ceremony.

Kate Bosworth stunned in an unusual, heavily encrusted, off the shoulder, rose coloured gown with chunky crystal accented bodice and severely pulled back hair. A pretty design well suited to her creamy complexion. Is it just me or does her hair style make her look like a bobble-head in this dress?

Amy Schumer chose a Prabal Gurung gown in color blocked black and white satin with an off the shoulder, boat neckline and pockets. Loved the elegant simplicity of this gown on her.  She looked cool and fresh and comfortably casual while still dressed up for the Red Carpet.

Let’s not forget Laverne Cox, elegant simplicity in a white column dress by Elizabeth Kennedy with a high neckline. She shows everyone on the red carpet how it’s done!

Olivia Wilde was casual elegance in this dark red sequinned halter dress from Michael Kors.  Accessorized with an off-white bag, chunky choker and ring. Olivia slayed but matching her eye shadow to her dress was not a great idea and created an effect reminiscent of the Walking Dead. Now if you ever wondered what Olivia Wilde would look like as a zombie, well, there you have it.

Brie Larson chose a gold, sparkly column dress with cut outs by Calvin Klein Custom also featuring a high neckline which sadly seemed to sag on this heavy crystalled gown. It either needed to be pulled up at the neck or she needed to stand up and push her chest out. There’s no support for the breasts in the bodice. Killer abs but she’s much too young for a SAG ALERT!

Cate Blanchett, shimmered in a pale pink daring and lovely Givenchy design that jiggled waves and waves of silky pink fringe with sheer embroidered panels at the bodice and midriff somewhat reminiscent of a Versace design.  At first glance it honestly reminded me somewhat of either an antique lampshade or a pull down window shade despite the fact that it was custom made for her.  Still she looked stunning and sensual as always but overload on the fringe in my opinion and the skirt looked like it needed frizz control STAT!

Stylling Diva’s worst dressed was Melissa McCarthy, who once again chose a shiny black material gown resembling a garbage bag, apparently her own ‘design’.  Blah, straggley hair and ugly pendant.  The only thing I possibly like about this outfit are the shoes.  Get a stylist! Or call me!  Please!!!

And today, in the What Were You Thinking? category, I both liked and hated Jane Fonda’s white column gown by St. Laurent. She actually almost managed to pull off what appears to be a huge dust ruffle around her neck and upper body which appears more balanced when you see the entire dress down to the floor.  Otherwise, your mind screams OMG she’s wearing a clown suit! Thank GOD they downplayed the hair and make up or Bozo the clown would have sued for unauthorized impersonation!

Julianne Moore was wearing a dark blue sequinned number by Tom Ford with a Tarzan type neckline….or perhaps Wilma Flintstone? Long sleeves, high neck, dark blue boring color. Her face is washed out looking and she is too covered up with limp dishrag hair.  She could have done better….I’m not really a fan of anything she wears though. Get a new stylist!

Jamie Alexandra. The gown’s cut and color are gorgeous on her but the print resembles an out of control geometry problem and there is no dazzle.  Her jewelry matches the color of the gown which gives a stunning effect against her skin and dark coloration but her hair looks messy and frizzed out as if she ran into an electrical storm on her way to the Red Carpet.

Eva Longoria in George Habeika…pretty but a little too cutesy.  It featured a thin gold belt, white short sleeves and a v neck, embellished with a jewelled ‘bow’ detail at the neckline and floral appliqués at the waist.  Slit skirt, teardrop open back. There is too much going on here.  I don’t care for the neckline on this one.  With the belt it’s too much.  I think it would have been nicer with a high neck and no detail and maybe no belt. Hippity hop to the flower shop…I’ll take a pass on this one.

Emilia Clarke fell flat in a black Valentino monstrosity with a high necked, buttoned up to the chin neckline.  This dress was ruined by a solid front panel at the bodice. Combinedwith sheer lace sleeves and skirt, the effect was that of a Mormon granny grieving the loss of her late husband while simultaneously trying to be sexy to attract a new one.  Can we say…underwhelming?
